Lyotropic Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCCP) is a type of high-performance polymer which gains liquid crystal properties when dissolved in a particular solvent, at a certain concentration and temperature. These polymers differ from thermotropic liquid crystal polymers in that they form anisotropic or nematically ordered solutions. The rod-like polymers can be oriented to create strong, stiff, and resilient fibers with high tensile strengths, while maintaining a light weight. Other characteristics which are common to most Liquid Crystal Polymers (LCP) include: resistance to chemicals, high thermal stability, low dimensional shrinkage and creep, and good electrical insulation. Due to these properties, LCPs are often utilized in the production of high-performance fibers and films for aerospace and defense, automotive, electronics, industrial, protective, and other specialized applications. Illustrative of the lyotropic LCP polymers are the aramid and PBO-based high-performance fibers.

In contrast, Celanese said its LCPs are used for high-density printed circuit boards and tiny antennas, sensors and connectors.
